Google has recently shared advice for website owners whose sites may have seen a drop in rankings due to being mistakenly flagged by the SafeSearch filter.

The newly published guidance includes three main actions you should take to resolve the problem. These are designed to help webmasters understand and fix potential mislabelling.

Firstly, Google explains how you can check whether your site is currently being filtered out by SafeSearch. This helps identify if the issue is indeed related to SafeSearch.

Secondly, the guidance provides a helpful breakdown of common mistakes that could trigger filtering. This includes content or formatting that might be misunderstood by the algorithm.

Finally, Google outlines several troubleshooting techniques you can use to resolve the issue and request re-evaluation if necessary.

These steps are aimed at helping website owners take control and ensure their content is correctly categorised, avoiding unnecessary ranking penalties.

 

SafeSearch Filtering

Google’s SafeSearch is a built-in feature designed to filter explicit or inappropriate content from appearing in search results. It helps ensure a safer browsing experience, particularly for children and users who prefer not to view sensitive material online. However, like any automated system, SafeSearch isn’t perfect and can occasionally make mistakes by wrongly flagging websites that don’t actually contain explicit content.

When this happens, websites may see a sudden drop in their search rankings or visibility, even though they haven’t violated any content policies. The first step is to check if your page is being filtered by SafeSearch. To do this, Google advises users to begin by ensuring that the SafeSearch setting is turned off in their browser. Then, search for a specific keyword or term that typically displays your page in the results. Once confirmed, switch the SafeSearch setting to “Filter” and search again. If your page disappears from the results, this may indicate it is being filtered by mistake.

It’s also possible for the entire website, not just individual pages, to be filtered. To check if this is the case, Google recommends doing a site-specific search using the “site:” operator followed by your domain name. After switching the SafeSearch setting to “Filter”, if your site no longer appears in the results, it’s a strong sign that your whole website may be affected by SafeSearch filtering.

If it becomes clear that your website is being impacted, the next step is to follow Google’s checklist for resolving common issues. This checklist outlines typical reasons content may be wrongly classified and provides guidance on how to fix those issues. Examples include improving page metadata, adjusting on-page content, and reviewing images or links that might be triggering the filter.
