Claude Leads AI Traffic Growth

Claude recorded the strongest referral traffic growth among all AI platforms tracked in SE Ranking’s latest dataset this year. Although it remains the smallest contributor overall, its rapid rise has made it the fastest-expanding source of AI-driven traffic.

The data shows Claude’s referral traffic increased almost fourfold between January and April, making it the standout performer in terms of growth rate across the platforms analysed.

Sharp Growth in Referral Traffic

According to SE Ranking, Claude’s share of referral traffic rose from 0.0029% in January to 0.0141% in April, representing an increase of around 386%.

Most of this growth occurred in March, when its share jumped significantly from 0.0049% to 0.0127%. This was identified as the largest monthly increase recorded for Claude within the dataset.

Despite this surge, Claude still accounts for a very small portion of overall AI-driven traffic. Across all platforms measured, AI sources collectively made up around 0.33% of total traffic in April, up from 0.1976% the previous year.

Within that group, ChatGPT remains dominant with 78.23% of AI-referred traffic. It is followed by Perplexity at 9.33%, Gemini at 6.85%, Copilot at 3.57%, and Claude at 1.40%.

Broader AI Traffic Trends

Between January and April, ChatGPT saw a modest 1.53% increase in referral traffic, while Gemini recorded a much stronger rise of 63%. The dataset also indicates that Gemini has now overtaken Perplexity in overall share.

SE Ranking suggests that the overall increase in Claude traffic may be linked to heightened public attention earlier in the year, particularly around discussions involving Anthropic’s policies on the use of its models.

Possible Drivers Behind the Spike

The report points to a period of increased visibility for Anthropic in February, including public statements regarding restrictions on the use of Claude for surveillance and autonomous weapons. This coincided with wider industry debate around AI safety and governance.

Additional external data also reflects rising interest. Similarweb figures show Claude reaching 11.3 million daily active mobile users in early March, while Ramp’s AI Index reported growing enterprise adoption across businesses during the same period.

Context Not Fully Captured in the Data

One element not included in SE Ranking’s analysis is the influence of OpenClaw, an open-source agent framework built on Claude models. The project gained significant traction, reaching over 247,000 GitHub stars by early March and was widely described as one of the fastest-growing repositories of its kind.

However, this type of usage is not reflected in referral data, as agent-based activity does not generate traditional click-through traffic from claude.ai to external websites.

Regional Differences in Growth

The dataset also highlights geographic variation. In April, Claude accounted for 0.0186% of traffic in the United States, compared with 0.0100% in the European Union and 0.0054% in the United Kingdom.

The US appears to be ahead in adoption, reaching similar levels of Claude-driven traffic roughly ten months earlier than other regions.

What the Numbers Mean

Although the growth rate is significant, Claude still represents only a very small share of overall referral traffic. The near fourfold increase should therefore be viewed as an early indicator rather than a major shift in traffic patterns.

SE Ranking also notes that its figures only include direct clicks from AI platforms, and that Claude is primarily used for tasks such as writing, coding and analysis rather than traditional search activity.

Future updates will show whether this surge represents a temporary spike or a longer-term trend. If growth continues, websites with a strong US audience are likely to notice changes first, as regional adoption patterns continue to evolve across the AI landscape.
