Google has introduced its new AI Mode in Search across the United States, integrating the latest Gemini 2.5 technology. Alongside this, AI Overviews are expanding significantly, now available in over 200 countries and supporting more than 40 languages. The update also brings several exciting new features, including Deep Search for in-depth research, Search Live to answer visual questions, and enhanced AI shopping tools to improve user experience. These developments mark a major step forward in how Google is using artificial intelligence to make searching smarter and more accessible worldwide.
AI Overviews: Improved Accuracy, Global Reach
AI Overviews, which were introduced last year, have now been rolled out to more than 200 countries and are available in over 40 languages.
Google states that this feature is changing how people use Search, with a notable 10% increase in search activity for queries that show AI Overviews in key markets such as the U.S. and India.
During the preview event, Liz Reid, Google’s VP and Head of Search, addressed concerns about the accuracy of AI.
She admitted there have been some “edge cases” where AI Overviews produced incorrect or potentially harmful information. Reid assured that these issues were taken seriously, necessary corrections made, and ongoing AI training has improved the outcomes over time.
Google is expected to keep refining its AI to enhance both accuracy and reliability.
AI Mode: Now Available to More Users
AI Mode is now available to all users across the U.S., without needing to register for Search Labs.
Previously, this feature was limited to testers, but now anyone in the U.S. can access AI Mode via a dedicated tab in Search and in the Google app’s search bar.
How AI Mode Works
AI Mode uses a “query fan-out” approach, which breaks complex questions into smaller segments and runs multiple searches simultaneously.
Users can also follow up with additional questions and receive links to relevant websites within the search results.
Google is treating AI Mode and AI Overviews as experimental platforms for new features, such as the upgraded Gemini 2.5 AI model. Feedback from users will help determine which features become part of the main Search experience.
Live Visual Search With Project Astra
Google is changing the way users search using visual tools. With the new Search Live feature, you can interact with Search through your phone’s camera.
Simply point your camera at an object, ask a question, and receive immediate answers along with helpful links. This feature is designed to enhance local searches, visual shopping experiences, and learning while on the move.
AI Agents: Getting Tasks Done for You
Google is introducing agentic features—AI tools designed to handle multi-step tasks on behalf of users.
At first, AI Mode will help with buying event tickets, booking restaurant tables, and arranging appointments. The AI sorts through hundreds of options and fills out necessary forms, while the user retains control to complete the final purchase.
Partners like Ticketmaster, StubHub, Resy, and Vagaro are already involved in supporting these services.
Smarter Shopping: Try On Clothes and Buy With Confidence
AI Mode is improving the way people shop online by introducing new features powered by Gemini and Google’s Shopping Graph.
These include personalised product panels that suggest items based on your style and preferences. There is also a virtual try-on option, where you can upload a photo to see how clothing fits, thanks to Google’s fashion AI.
Additionally, the agentic checkout feature helps you track prices, receive sale alerts, and allows Google’s AI to make purchases for you through Google Pay when prices drop.
For sports and finance enthusiasts, AI Mode can create custom charts and graphs using live data to provide up-to-date insights.
Personalization and Privacy Controls
In the near future, AI Mode will provide more personalised search results by analysing your previous searches and, if you choose to opt in, information from other Google apps such as Gmail.
For instance, when planning a trip, AI Mode could recommend restaurants or events tailored to your bookings and preferences. Google assures users that they will always be informed when their personal data is being used and will have full control over their privacy settings at all times.
Google’s View: Search Use Cases Are Growing
During the preview event, CEO Sundar Pichai spoke about the impact of AI on the future of search.
He described the ongoing changes as “far from a zero sum moment,” emphasising that the ways people use Search are expanding significantly.
Pichai also highlighted the growing enthusiasm among users and expressed confidence that the experience will continue to improve as AI technology advances.
