This is an updated list of effective SEO techniques that can help improve your website’s visibility.
These are the same strategies I apply to consistently generate 438,950 organic visitors every month. With the right approach, these methods can significantly enhance your site’s performance and attract more traffic.
Let’s explore these techniques in detail:
1. Find New Keywords on Reddit
Reddit is a valuable resource for keyword research, particularly for discovering long-tail keywords.
To start, visit Reddit and navigate to relevant subreddits where your target audience is active. For example, if you’re writing about the Paleo Diet, check out the r/paleo subreddit.
If you’re unsure where to find your audience, simply search for your topic on Reddit. Look through the threads and subreddits that come up.
Pay attention to recurring terms in discussions. If users are frequently mentioning certain topics, it’s likely they are also searching for those keywords on Google. For instance, while exploring “link building,” I found keywords like “content strategy” that I hadn’t considered before.
2. Optimise for Google RankBrain
Google’s RankBrain algorithm has changed the game for SEO. This machine learning algorithm evaluates how users interact with search results.
To rank higher, focus on user experience. While backlinks and keywords are still crucial, RankBrain’s influence is growing. In fact, it’s now one of Google’s top three ranking factors.
To optimise for RankBrain, improve your organic click-through rate (CTR). If users are clicking your link, it signals to Google that your content is valuable, which can boost your rankings. One effective method to increase CTR is to include numbers in your titles and meta descriptions.
Also, focus on reducing your bounce rate and increasing dwell time. If users leave your site quickly, it indicates they aren’t finding what they need. Studies show that sites with better dwell time generally rank higher. To keep visitors engaged, write compelling introductions and break your content into easily digestible sections.
3. Refresh and Republish Old Blog Posts
Updating older blog posts can significantly improve traffic. For instance, after receiving a case study from Emil, I decided to integrate it into an existing post rather than create a new one.
I updated the content and images and shared the revamped post with my newsletter subscribers and on social media. This led to a remarkable 118.91% increase in organic traffic to that page.
Utilising this strategy, known as “The Content Relaunch,” has proven effective multiple times and can help breathe new life into your older content.
4. Create Effective Title and Description Tags
Effective title and description tags lead to more clicks in search results, which can improve your Google rankings. To find out what resonates with users, check Google Ads for your target keywords. Ads for competitive keywords are based on extensive testing aimed at maximising clicks.
For example, if you’re writing a blog post about “best mattress,” look at the related ads for insights. Incorporating phrases from these ads into your title and description can increase your click-through rate.
5. Identify Broken Link Building Opportunities on Wikipedia
Broken link building is a useful strategy, but finding broken links can be time-consuming. However, Wikipedia’s editing system helps simplify this. When an editor finds a dead link, they mark it with a “dead link” footnote, allowing others to verify it before removal.
To find these links, use the search string:
“`
site:wikipedia.org [keyword] + “dead link”
“`
Once you locate a dead link, you can create a replacement resource on your site and reach out to those linking to the dead resource.
6. Analyze Your Competitors’ Keywords
To find keywords for your content, you can either use a keyword tool or look at what your competitors are ranking for. Focusing on competitors often yields better results. Start by identifying a competing site that ranks well in your niche.
Enter their homepage into a keyword research tool like SEMrush to get a list of keywords they rank for. While some may not be relevant to your audience, you should find a selection that fits your business needs.
7. Enhance Content for Social Shares
Not all content is share-worthy, and without shares, your chances of ranking in Google diminish. However, creating shareable content isn’t overly complex. For instance, a well-structured post on link building has generated over 900,000 visits from various platforms.
To maximise shares, follow these tips:
- Use short URLs for your posts, as they typically get more clicks.
- Include visible social share buttons on the page, which can increase interactions on social media.
Although Google may not directly consider social signals for rankings, increased traffic from shares can lead to backlinks, which positively impact your rankings.
Now that your content is optimised for sharing, ensure your on-page SEO is solid.
8. Link to Authoritative Sites
Google assesses your page partly based on the quality and relevance of outbound links. Linking to reliable sources can enhance your page’s credibility. Pages that reference useful resources are often viewed as higher quality.
Research shows a positive correlation between outbound links and Google rankings. Plus, these links improve user experience by guiding readers to additional valuable content.
Key Point: Aim to link to at least three quality, relevant sources in every piece you publish.
9. Boost Underperforming Pages
A recent study found that fewer than 1% of Google users visit the second page of search results. To improve rankings for pages on the second or third page, consider adding internal links.
Here’s a three-step process:
- Use Google Search Console: Find keywords where your pages rank between 11 and 30. These keywords likely have good search volume.
- Identify Authoritative Pages: Use tools like Semrush to locate your site’s most authoritative pages.
- Add Internal Links: Create internal links from these authoritative pages to the underperforming ones.
10. Improve Email Outreach Response Rates
When people receive an email from an unknown sender, they often wonder who you are and what you want. Answering these questions quickly can increase your response rates.
One effective way is to use the word “because” early in your email. Research shows that this word can make requests seem more legitimate, leading to higher acceptance rates.
Example: “Can I use the copy machine because I’m in a rush?” This simple addition can significantly increase positive responses.
11. Write Detailed YouTube Descriptions
Videos appear in over 10% of search results, making it crucial to rank well on Google. To improve your video’s visibility, write long, detailed descriptions.
Since Google can’t interpret video content, it relies on the title and description to understand the topic. Including your target keywords in the description can enhance your rankings.
For example, a comprehensive 200-word description can help your video rank on the first page for its target keyword.
12. Optimise Content for Semantic SEO
A few years ago, Google introduced the Hummingbird algorithm. Before this, Google mainly focused on individual keywords. Now, it can understand the overall topic of your page, which is known as Semantic SEO.
To get started with Semantic SEO, first, optimise your page around your main keyword as usual. Then, include related subtopics. This helps Google understand the broader topic of your content.
For example, one of my pages covers 200 Google ranking factors. By including related topics, Google ranks this page for over 2,400 keywords.
You can use tools like LSIGraph to find related subtopics.
13. Include Long-Tail Keywords in Title Tags
Here’s how this works: I published a post titled “White Hat SEO Case Study: How to Get a #1 Ranking.” My main keyword was “white hat SEO,” which I included in the title. However, I also noticed that “SEO case study” had decent search volume, so I added that long-tail keyword to the title as well. This helped the post reach the fifth spot for “SEO case study” within weeks.
Since “SEO case study” is less competitive than “white hat SEO,” I started receiving traffic from it quickly, eventually helping the page rank for both keywords.
Bottom Line: Find long-tail keywords to include in your titles for quicker traffic and broader rankings.
14. Use Wikipedia for Keyword and Topic Ideas
Looking for keywords that your competitors might not know about? Check Wikipedia. It can help you discover closely related keywords.
To do this, search for a keyword on Wikipedia. Look for sections that show related topics, such as the “Contents” box, sidebars, internal links, and “See Also” sections. You can gather numerous keyword ideas from a single entry.
To find more ideas, click on internal links and repeat the process.
15. Find Link Building Opportunities from “Best of” Lists
If you’re involved in link building, you know it can be challenging to find relevant prospects. However, bloggers often create “best of” lists in your niche.
To find these lists, use search queries like:
– “[keyword] blogs to follow”
– “best [keyword] posts 2024”
– “top [keyword] blogs to follow 2024”
For example, searching for “fitness blogs to follow” might lead you to a list of top fitness blogs, which are great targets for outreach or building relationships.
16. Publish Content with At Least 1,447 Words
Longer content tends to perform better than short posts. A study of 11.8 million Google search results showed that the average word count for first-page results is 1,447 words. Longer articles are also mobile-friendly and perform well in mobile searches.
Why do longer posts work? They demonstrate to Google that you’re providing detailed information, which is what users are looking for.
17. Understand the “First Link Priority Rule”
When you have two links pointing to the same page on your site, Google only pays attention to the first link. This is important for your site’s navigation. For example, if you have a navigation bar at the top of your page, the first link Google sees will take priority.
If you include another link within your content with different anchor text, it may be ignored if it’s not the first one.
Key Takeaway: Use keyword-rich anchor text in your site’s navigation since the links below won’t count as much.
18. Create Your Own Keywords
One of the best SEO strategies is to create unique keywords. When you invent a brand, product, or method, you’re the only one optimising for that term. If your creation gains popularity, you’ll rank highly for that keyword.
For example, I wrote a post titled “Link Building Case Study: How I Increased My Search Traffic by 110% in 14 Days.” Instead of targeting a common keyword, I introduced “The Skyscraper Technique,” which now drives consistent traffic to my site.
Tip: When you develop a unique technique or method, name it to create your own keyword.
19. Use Creative Seed Keywords
In SEO, the effectiveness of a keyword tool often depends on the seed keywords you provide. Using the same seed keywords as your competitors will yield similar results.
To avoid this, try using SeedKeywords.com. Here’s how it works:
- Go to Seed Keywords and create a scenario that describes how someone would search for your business.
- Click “create my scenario” to get a unique link.
- Share this link with friends, family, and potential customers to see what keywords they would use.
This will give you a list of unique seed keywords to use in Google Keyword Planner.
