WordPress Real-Time Editing Under Fire

WordPress has postponed the release of its much-anticipated version 7.0, largely due to stability concerns surrounding its new real-time collaboration (RTC) feature. The delay has sparked debate within the community, with some questioning whether the feature should be included in the core platform at all, while others see it as a sign of deeper structural challenges within WordPress.

The RTC feature is part of the wider Gutenberg development roadmap, which has been divided into four stages. These include the block editor, full site editing, collaboration tools, and eventually multilingual support within the core system. Version 7.0 was expected to introduce the third phase, bringing collaborative editing alongside improvements designed to support AI functionality within the platform.

Real-time collaboration is intended to allow multiple users to edit content simultaneously within the block editor. This could be particularly useful for agencies, publishers, and teams working together on content, making WordPress more competitive with other collaborative tools.

The feature has already undergone testing through WordPress.com, operated by Automattic, where it has been available to enterprise-level beta users since late 2025. Early feedback suggests that RTC performs well when websites are built using modern WordPress practices, particularly when relying on native blocks or properly developed custom blocks.

In controlled testing environments, teams were able to push the feature to its limits by adding multiple blocks at once, copying large amounts of content, and editing posts collaboratively in real time. In these scenarios, the system generally performed well, provided it was used within recommended guidelines.

However, challenges emerged due to how the collaboration data was originally stored. The initial approach relied on existing database structures, which led to performance limitations and bugs. As a result, developers have opted to redesign the system by introducing a dedicated database table specifically for RTC data, with the aim of improving reliability and scalability.

The earlier version of the feature also restricted the number of users who could edit content simultaneously, helping to reduce the risk of performance issues. This limitation highlighted the need for further development before the feature could be rolled out more widely.

The delay has led some industry figures to raise concerns about the broader state of WordPress. Joost de Valk, founder of Yoast SEO, has argued that the challenges faced by RTC reflect underlying issues within the platform’s architecture. He suggests that newer features are increasingly constrained by older systems, requiring developers to rethink how data is handled.

That said, not everyone agrees with this view. Discussions within the WordPress community show a clear divide, with many developers maintaining that the platform remains robust and does not require a complete overhaul.

Another area of concern is the potential impact on web hosting providers. Real-time collaboration could place additional strain on shared hosting environments, particularly if large numbers of users are editing content simultaneously. Hosting companies may need to consider limits on concurrent users or introduce tiered access depending on customer plans.

There is also an ongoing debate about whether RTC should be included in the WordPress core or released as a plugin instead. Some professionals argue that features added to the core should benefit the majority of users, keeping the platform simple and efficient. From this perspective, real-time collaboration may be better suited as an optional add-on rather than a built-in feature.

Others, however, believe that collaboration tools are becoming increasingly important, especially for agencies, freelancers, and editorial teams. Existing plugins already demonstrate demand for such functionality, suggesting that RTC could play a valuable role within WordPress if implemented effectively.

At the same time, the growing importance of artificial intelligence has added another layer to the discussion. When the original development roadmap was created several years ago, AI was not as prominent as it is today. Many users now see AI integration as a key priority, potentially even more important than collaboration features.

Despite the current delay, real-time collaboration is still expected to be included in WordPress 7.0 once it reaches a stable state. If successfully implemented, it could significantly improve how teams work together within the platform, particularly for those managing content across multiple users and locations.
