SEO teams are increasingly looking beyond traditional search rankings as AI platforms rely on a wider range of third-party sources. Wikipedia, podcasts and Reddit are becoming important places where AI systems find information about businesses, industries and products.

These platforms have long been familiar to PR and communications teams. Now, as AI search becomes more influential, SEO teams have an opportunity to work more closely with their PR colleagues and make better use of these existing channels.

Wikipedia Helps AI Understand Industries

Wikipedia continues to appear frequently in AI-generated answers.

Research from Muck Rack, covering more than 25 million AI-cited links, identified Wikipedia as the most cited domain in ChatGPT. The site also appears among Claude’s leading sources across a range of industries.

Ahrefs has ranked Wikipedia among the most cited domains in Google AI Mode, while research from Profound found that around one in six cited ChatGPT conversations included Wikipedia.

However, the opportunity is not simply about getting a company’s own Wikipedia page mentioned.

Muck Rack’s Generative Pulse 2025 report found that 42% of Wikipedia citations appearing in AI answers came from pages covering processes, technologies or methods rather than individual brands or people.

This suggests that Wikipedia can help AI systems understand how an industry works, rather than simply providing information about a particular company.

For businesses, this means relevant and well-sourced pages about industry concepts, technologies and methodologies can potentially become useful reference points for AI systems.

Wikipedia Relies On Independent Sources

Wikipedia’s rules also explain why companies cannot simply use the platform as another promotional channel.

Articles are expected to be neutral and supported by reliable independent sources. Wikipedia discourages employees from directly editing pages about their own organisations, while sources such as press releases, sponsored content and interviews with company representatives generally do not meet the same standard as independent journalism or academic research.

For PR professionals, many of these requirements will already be familiar.

The focus is on building a credible public record through independent coverage rather than simply publishing more brand-owned content.

Podcasts Can Create Multiple AI Sources

Podcasts offer another opportunity because an appearance can generate much more than an audio recording.

A single interview can produce a podcast episode, show notes, a transcript, video content with captions and potentially a link back to the company’s website.

This gives AI systems several different pieces of content that can be discovered and referenced.

Contently’s 2026 LLM Citation Analysis identified YouTube as the third most-cited domain across major AI engines. Ahrefs has also reported a strong relationship between branded web mentions, YouTube mentions and overall AI visibility.

The important point is that the interview itself is only the starting point.

Businesses can extend the value of a podcast appearance by making sure transcripts are available, creating short video clips, securing relevant links and adding the appearance to a page that can be crawled by search engines and AI systems.

PR agencies have been repurposing media appearances in this way for years. AI search simply gives those activities another potential purpose.

Reddit Is Becoming A Major AI Source

Reddit has also become increasingly visible across search and AI platforms.

SISTRIX data from late August placed reddit.com as the fourth most visible domain in US Google Search results. Ahrefs Brand Radar reported around 5.8 million Reddit citations in Google AI Overviews, compared with 1.3 million for ChatGPT, 477,000 for Gemini and 202,000 for Microsoft Copilot.

Reddit is also significant for B2B businesses.

Research from Comscore and Reddit’s SurveyMonkey study found that Reddit reaches 59% of US business decision-makers. It also reported that 38% of Reddit’s business audience does not use LinkedIn, suggesting the platform can reach people who may not be accessible through more traditional B2B channels.

The scale of the platform means conversations about brands, products and industries can become highly visible.

For businesses, this makes Reddit worth monitoring even if it has never previously formed part of their SEO strategy.

SEO and PR Are Moving Closer Together

Traditional SEO has largely focused on improving a website’s visibility within search results.

AI search works differently. Instead of simply presenting a list of pages, AI systems can combine information from multiple sources to produce an answer.

That makes third-party information particularly relevant.

Independent articles, community discussions, Wikipedia pages, podcast transcripts and other external references can all contribute to the information available to AI systems.

PR teams have traditionally focused on many of these areas, including earned media, reputation management, media relationships and community conversations.

As a result, SEO teams may benefit from involving PR earlier when developing an AI visibility strategy.

Three Ways SEO Teams Can Work With PR

1. Review Your Wikipedia Presence

Start by checking your company’s Wikipedia footprint before attempting to make changes.

Search for the organisation directly on Wikipedia, review the article’s discussion page and look through its revision history.

Companies should be particularly careful about employees editing their own pages, as Wikipedia strongly discourages this practice.

If changes are needed, PR or communications teams may already have experience with the independent sourcing and editorial requirements involved.

2. Get More From Podcast Appearances

A podcast booking should not necessarily be considered finished when the episode goes live.

Check that the transcript and show notes are accurate, ask whether a relevant website link can be included and consider turning useful sections of the interview into shorter videos or social content.

The appearance can also be added to a media or press page that AI systems and search engines can access.

This creates several additional sources of information from one media opportunity.

3. Monitor Reddit Conversations

SEO teams should also ask their PR or communications colleagues which Reddit communities they already monitor.

Find out which subreddits are relevant to the industry and identify conversations where the brand, products or wider category are being discussed.

This information can then be considered alongside AI visibility tracking.

Many SEO tools still focus heavily on traditional rankings, meaning Reddit conversations can easily be overlooked even though they are appearing in AI-generated search results.

AI Visibility Depends On More Than Your Website

The growing presence of Wikipedia, podcasts and Reddit in AI citations highlights a broader change in search.

A company’s own website remains important, but it is no longer the only place where AI systems can gather information about a brand or industry.

Third-party sources can provide context, reputation signals and independent evidence that may influence the information available to AI systems.

This does not mean SEO and PR need to become the same discipline. Instead, the changing search landscape creates more opportunities for the two teams to share information and coordinate their work.

SEO teams can bring data and search expertise, while PR teams may already have relationships, media knowledge and reputation-building processes that are increasingly relevant to AI visibility.

For businesses planning their AI search strategy, understanding what their PR team is already doing across Wikipedia, podcasts and Reddit could be a useful place to start.
