Many website owners invest time in optimising their pages with techniques like resource hints, assuming these small tweaks will boost search performance. Features such as preload, prefetch, preconnect, and dns-prefetch are widely used to improve page load speed and overall user experience. However, Google has now clarified that while these strategies help browsers, they do not affect how Googlebot crawls or indexes pages.

How Googlebot Differs From Browsers

In a recent episode of the Search Off the Record podcast, Google’s Gary Illyes and Martin Splitt explained the differences between browser behaviour and Googlebot’s internal processes. Unlike a standard browser, which fetches resources in real time and can be slowed down by network latency, Google’s crawler operates within Google’s own infrastructure.

Illyes explained that Google handles DNS resolution and caches page resources independently, so the latency issues browsers face do not exist for Googlebot. Preloading or prefetching resources, which are designed to reduce wait times for users, are largely irrelevant for the crawler.

“It’s very helpful if you have, like, a poor internet connection for DNS Prefetching. In our case, we don’t need to because we can talk very fast to all the cascading DNS servers,” Illyes said.

The key takeaway is that resource hints are still beneficial, but primarily for enhancing user experience, not for SEO purposes. Faster-loading pages improve retention and conversion, but they won’t directly influence crawling or ranking.

Proper Metadata Placement Matters

Googlebot correctly ignored them, demonstrating the importance of placing all search engine directives in the head section.

Illyes further noted that improper placement could even lead to page hijacking. If canonical tags were accepted in the body, malicious actors could manipulate them to remove pages from search results. This reinforces the best practice of clearly specifying all critical metadata in the <head> for consistent crawling and indexing.

HTML Validity Does Not Impact Rankings

It is common for technical audits to flag HTML validation errors, and many assume that valid HTML is a ranking factor. Illyes clarified that HTML validity, while important for standards compliance and accessibility, does not directly affect Google rankings.

HTML validity is binary — a page is either valid or invalid. Minor issues, such as a missing closing tag, typically have no effect on user experience or Googlebot’s ability to crawl and index content.

Splitt also noted that semantic markup, like heading hierarchy and proper use of HTML5 structural elements, does not carry direct ranking weight. However, these practices remain valuable for accessibility, user navigation, and overall site usability.

Diagnosing Issues vs Chasing Metrics

Understanding the distinction between browser optimisations and crawling behaviour is crucial for technical SEO. Many site owners may waste time fixing issues that don’t impact search visibility, such as implementing unnecessary resource hints or chasing perfect HTML validation scores.

If meta robots, canonical links, or hreflang tags are not functioning as expected, the first step is to check whether scripts or iframes are pushing them out of the <head> section. Additionally, Google’s updated crawler guidance, such as the use of ETag headers, can help reduce unnecessary crawling while ensuring pages are correctly indexed.

Looking Ahead: Client Hints and Beyond

Splitt mentioned that future episodes may focus on newer technologies such as client hints, including Accept-CH and Sec-CH-UA headers. These will gradually replace traditional user agent strings and influence how browsers communicate with servers.
