A recent discussion from Google has sparked fresh debate around a topic that often worries website owners and SEO professionals alike—website size. As modern websites continue to grow, many assume that larger pages automatically mean poorer performance. However, insights shared by Google’s Gary Illyes and Martin Splitt suggest that this assumption may not be entirely accurate.

In fact, the idea that websites are becoming “too large” is not as straightforward as it seems. While page size has increased over time, Google argues that focusing purely on this metric can lead to the wrong conclusions. Instead, it is far more important to understand what makes up that size and whether the content serves a meaningful purpose.

One of the key issues lies in how page size is defined. For some, it refers only to the HTML content of a page. For others, it includes everything that loads alongside it, such as images, stylesheets, and scripts. This lack of a consistent definition makes it difficult to compare websites or determine what qualifies as “too large”.

This distinction becomes particularly important when discussing how search engines interact with web pages. For example, Googlebot has a limit on how much HTML it processes per page. While this might initially sound restrictive, the actual allowance is quite substantial when considered in terms of raw content.

However, when additional elements like images and JavaScript are taken into account, the conversation shifts away from search engine crawling and towards user experience. At this stage, factors such as page speed, loading time, and responsiveness become far more relevant than the raw size itself.

Data from industry reports shows that average page sizes have grown significantly over the past decade. What was once under a megabyte has now more than doubled in many cases. While this may seem concerning, it does not necessarily indicate a decline in quality or efficiency.

A major reason for this growth is the increasing complexity of modern websites. Pages now include richer media, interactive features, and integrations with various tools and platforms. These additions naturally increase the overall size, but they also enhance functionality and user engagement.

Another important factor to consider is data compression. Many websites use advanced compression methods to reduce the amount of data that needs to be transferred when a page loads. This means that although a page may appear large once fully loaded, the actual data sent over the network is often much smaller.

For example, a webpage might occupy a significant amount of storage on a user’s device after loading, but the data required to deliver it could be reduced by nearly half during transmission. This creates a grey area when trying to define the true size of a page.

This ambiguity highlights a broader challenge within the industry. When people talk about page size, they are often referring to different measurements without realising it. As a result, discussions about whether pages are “too large” can become confusing or even misleading.

Another interesting point raised by Google is that size alone does not determine efficiency. A large page can still be highly effective if most of its data consists of valuable content. In contrast, a smaller page may perform poorly if it is filled with unnecessary code or inefficient structures.

This brings attention to the balance between content and markup. Ideally, a page should contain a strong proportion of meaningful information rather than excessive technical overhead. However, not all non-visible data can be considered wasteful.

In many cases, websites include information that users never see but is still essential. Structured data, for example, helps search engines understand content more effectively. Similarly, metadata and scripts may support third-party tools, analytics, or compliance requirements.

This reflects the reality that modern websites are designed for more than just human visitors. They must also cater to search engines, automated systems, and digital tools. Each of these elements contributes to the overall size of a page, even if it does not directly impact what the user sees.

There have been suggestions that separating user-facing content from machine-readable data could reduce page size. While this idea may sound appealing in theory, Google believes it is not practical in reality.

One of the main concerns is the potential for misuse. If different versions of content were served to users and machines, it could create opportunities for manipulation and spam. This has been a problem in the past, particularly when websites maintained separate mobile and desktop versions.

In those cases, inconsistencies between versions often caused issues for both users and search engines. As a result, the industry has largely moved towards a single-page approach, even if it means accepting some level of inefficiency.

When looking at the bigger picture, Google suggests that the size of an entire website is not especially meaningful. What matters more is the performance of individual pages and how efficiently they deliver content to users.

That said, larger pages are not without consequences. Heavier pages require more data to be transferred, which can lead to slower loading times. This can affect how users interact with a site, including how long they stay and whether they complete desired actions.

There is also a broader impact in terms of resource usage. Larger pages consume more bandwidth and processing power, which can affect both users and the wider web ecosystem. Even with faster internet speeds, efficiency remains an important consideration.

Ultimately, the discussion shifts the focus away from size alone and towards purpose. Instead of asking whether a page is too large, it may be more useful to ask whether the data it contains is necessary and valuable.

As websites continue to evolve, they will likely become even more complex. The key for publishers and developers is to ensure that any increase in size is justified by improved functionality, better user experience, or enhanced discoverability.

In this context, larger pages are not inherently a problem. What matters is how effectively they are built and whether they deliver real value to both users and search engines.
