New research from Wix suggests that while .com remains the most widely used domain extension, several alternatives are performing strongly across traffic and ecommerce revenue.

The analysis looked at Wix websites and domain registrations between 2025 and 2026, highlighting growing interest in extensions such as .org, .store, .ai and .io.

.Com Still Leads

The .com extension continues to dominate, particularly in the US. Wix found that 82% of its US-based websites use .com, making businesses 13 times more likely to choose it than another extension.

The research also found that .com leads across several countries, including Brazil, India, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine and the US.

However, local domain extensions remain popular in some markets. Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland recorded higher registrations for their local extensions than .com. In Australia, Canada, France and Great Britain, the split between local domains and .com is more balanced.

This suggests that while .com remains highly established, businesses are becoming more comfortable considering other options.

.Org Shows Strong Ecommerce Results

One of the more notable findings concerns .org domains.

According to Wix, websites using .org are 34% more likely to generate ecommerce revenue than those using .com. They also receive around 3% more website sessions.

The results suggest that consumers are not necessarily avoiding alternative extensions when making purchases online. In some cases, they may even perform better than the traditional .com.

.Store Gains Ground

The .store extension is also showing strong results among ecommerce businesses.

Wix found that ecommerce websites using .store generate 10% more revenue than .com sites. They also generate twice as much revenue as websites using .shop or .net.

Registration activity is growing too. Between January and May 2026, registrations for .store, .online and .shop domains doubled, showing that businesses are increasingly exploring alternatives to .com.

Growing Interest in .Ai and .Io

Technology businesses are also driving demand for specialist domain extensions.

Wix reported a 20% increase in .ai registrations between January and May 2026, making it the tenth most popular extension in its dataset.

The .io extension saw an even larger increase, with registrations rising 32 times in May 2026. The extension has become closely associated with technology and software businesses, making it an attractive choice for companies operating in these areas.

The growth of .ai and .io reflects the wider expansion of AI, software and technology-focused businesses that want their domain name to communicate something about their industry.

Should Businesses Consider More Than .Com?

The findings also raise an important question about domain name strategy.

While securing a .com version of a brand remains valuable, businesses may also want to consider other extensions for defensive purposes. This could include domains connected to important keywords or future areas of the business that competitors could otherwise acquire.

For newer businesses, alternative extensions can also provide more options when the preferred .com domain is already taken.

Key Takeaways

  • .Com remains the leading choice, particularly in the US and several other major markets.
  • .Org websites showed stronger results, with higher ecommerce revenue potential and slightly more sessions than .com sites.
  • .Store is becoming more popular among ecommerce businesses and has recorded stronger revenue performance than several traditional extensions.
  • .Ai and .io are growing rapidly, particularly among technology and software businesses.
  • Local extensions remain important in several countries, including Great Britain, Germany, France and Australia.
  • Domain strategies are expanding, with businesses increasingly looking beyond simply securing a .com address.

The research does not suggest that alternative domain extensions are universally better than .com. Instead, it shows that consumers are becoming increasingly comfortable using websites with different domain endings.

For businesses, the choice of domain may therefore depend more on the target market, industry and purpose of the website rather than simply defaulting to .com.
