OpenAI has introduced a new, lower-cost subscription option named ChatGPT Go, which will first be offered to users in India.

This plan provides significantly more access compared to the free version, including up to ten times the number of messages, image generations, and file uploads. It’s positioned as a more affordable way for users to make the most of the platform’s advanced features.

OpenAI has announced the launch of a new budget-friendly subscription plan, which will first be introduced in India. The service, named ChatGPT Go, will be offered at a price of 399 Rupees per month, inclusive of GST. In international terms, this works out at roughly $4.57 USD per month, positioning it as a very affordable option compared to existing premium tiers.

This new plan builds on the features of the free version but offers much greater capacity and flexibility. Subscribers will gain access to ten times more messages, image generations, and file uploads than what is available in the free plan. On top of that, the subscription also provides double the memory, meaning users can benefit from a more personalised and consistent experience with the AI.

According to Nick Turley from the ChatGPT team, one of the major updates with this launch is the introduction of localised pricing in Indian Rupees. He highlighted that users in India can now also pay through UPI, making the subscription more convenient and accessible to the country’s large digital payment user base.

The company’s official announcement also detailed the platform availability for the new subscription. ChatGPT Go will be accessible across multiple devices, including web browsers, mobile applications on both iOS and Android, as well as desktop applications for macOS and Windows. This ensures that users can enjoy the upgraded plan on whichever device suits them best.

At launch, however, ChatGPT Go will be geo-restricted exclusively to India. This means that users outside of the country will not yet be able to subscribe. OpenAI has not confirmed whether or when the plan will be rolled out in other regions, though industry observers expect a wider release if the initial launch proves successful.

For Indian users, the plan offers a more practical way to access ChatGPT on a regular basis. The significant increase in limits makes it an attractive option for students, freelancers, content creators, and professionals who rely on the tool daily for writing, research, or creative projects.

The pricing also places it within reach of a much larger audience compared to more expensive subscription tiers. By setting the cost at under 400 Rupees per month, OpenAI appears to be targeting affordability as a key driver in expanding its user base in India.

The addition of more memory is another standout feature, as it allows ChatGPT to retain more context and provide better continuity in conversations. This improvement can be particularly useful for long-term projects, ongoing studies, or detailed work tasks where consistency matters.

With payment support through UPI, OpenAI is also tapping into one of India’s most widely used digital payment systems. This move reflects the company’s effort to adapt its offerings to local markets and make its technology more accessible.

Although currently limited to India, the launch of ChatGPT Go signals a possible shift in OpenAI’s strategy towards regional pricing models and more affordable subscription tiers. If successful, this could pave the way for similar plans to be rolled out globally in the near future.
