Recent reports revealed that publicly shared Claude conversations briefly appeared in Google Search, highlighting an important lesson for website owners and SEO professionals: blocking a page from being crawled is not the same as preventing it from being indexed.

The incident has renewed discussion around how Google handles robots.txt directives and noindex instructions, and why using the wrong combination can produce unexpected results.

Shared Claude Chats Appeared in Google

Over the weekend, users discovered that shared Claude conversations were appearing in Google search results. Investigations into the issue found that the pages included an X-Robots-Tag header set to none, which Google treats as both noindex and nofollow.

However, there was one significant problem.

The same URLs were also blocked by the site’s robots.txt file, preventing Google’s crawler from accessing the pages and reading the noindex instruction.

This created conflicting signals for Google’s indexing system.

Why the Rules Conflict

A robots.txt file controls whether search engines are allowed to crawl a page, while a noindex directive tells search engines not to include that page in search results.

For a noindex instruction to work, Google must first be able to access the page.

If crawling is blocked, Google cannot read the noindex directive. Instead, it may still discover the URL through links from other websites and choose to index the address without ever viewing its contents.

This distinction explains why blocking a page does not automatically prevent it from appearing in search results.

What Was Found

Checks carried out on Claude’s shared URLs revealed several important details:

  • The /share/ directory was blocked in the site’s robots.txt file.
  • Shared pages returned an X-Robots-Tag: none header.
  • The same response was returned even when requests identified themselves as Googlebot.
  • Another path used for Claude Artifacts was not blocked in the same way, although its indexing controls could not be fully verified.

This combination meant Google was unable to access the pages to read the noindex instruction, despite the header being present.

Why Robots.txt Doesn’t Stop Indexing

Google has consistently explained that robots.txt only controls crawling, not indexing.

If Google discovers a blocked URL through external links or other sources, it can still include that URL in search results even though it has never visited the page itself.

To reliably prevent indexing, Google recommends allowing the page to be crawled while applying a noindex directive that Googlebot can read.

Using both robots.txt blocking and noindex on the same page can therefore produce unintended results.

Anthropic’s Response

Anthropic stated that shared Claude links only become discoverable when users publish them somewhere publicly accessible. Links shared privately, such as through direct messages, are not expected to appear in search results.

The company also noted that shared URLs are difficult to guess, although this does not address the issue of conflicting crawl and indexing instructions identified during the investigation.

Google, meanwhile, reiterated that website owners control how their pages are crawled and indexed, and that its systems follow the directives provided where possible.

What Claude Users Should Know

Anyone who has shared Claude conversations should review their account settings and check which chats remain publicly accessible.

Removing a shared link disables access to that conversation, but it does not automatically remove any existing search results. Since Google’s indexing is controlled by Anthropic’s website configuration, individual users cannot directly request removal for those URLs.

Claude Artifacts are also managed separately, meaning unsharing a conversation does not necessarily remove any associated published content.
