Reports suggest Google’s August 2026 Spam Update may be targeting websites that use AI to mass-produce content primarily for search rankings.

AI Content Is Not Automatically Spam

Using AI to create content does not, by itself, violate Google’s spam policies. The bigger concern is when websites use automated tools to produce large volumes of pages mainly to attract search traffic rather than provide useful information.

Recent reports suggest Google may have strengthened its ability to identify this type of mass-produced content. While this does not mean the entire August Spam Update was aimed at AI content, it could explain some of the ranking losses reported by heavily automated websites.

Signs of Mass-Produced Content

Some SEO professionals have reported seeing websites that publish large amounts of AI-generated content lose visibility following the update.

One theory is that websites built almost entirely through automation may have fewer established signals from users and previous activity. By contrast, sites that had been operating manually for longer before introducing AI may have built up stronger engagement and a more established presence.

However, these observations are based on limited examples and should not be treated as confirmation of how Google’s systems work.

Human Review Could Make a Difference

There are also reports of websites continuing to perform well despite using AI to produce content, particularly where articles are reviewed by people before publication.

This suggests that the issue may not simply be whether AI was involved. Human editing, fact-checking and adding original value can help make content more useful and less like automatically generated search material.

The Real Issue May Be Mass Production

A key point emerging from the discussion is that Google may be more concerned with why and how content is produced rather than whether AI was used.

If a website creates hundreds or thousands of pages simply to target keywords and manipulate rankings, the problem is the mass production and search manipulation. Using AI as part of the process does not necessarily make the content spam, but relying on automation to produce large volumes of low-value pages could increase the risk.

AI Slop Remains a Search Problem

The update has also renewed complaints about what is often called “AI slop” – pages that follow almost identical structures, repeat information and offer little original value.

Searchers may come across several websites answering the same question with similar headings, bullet points and wording, without providing anything genuinely useful or different.

This type of content can make search results less helpful, particularly when a simple answer is expanded into a much longer article purely to target additional keywords.

What This Means for SEO

The latest reports do not prove that Google is penalising every website that uses AI. Some AI-assisted sites may have seen improvements, while others may have lost rankings.

The safer approach is to focus on the quality and purpose of the content, rather than simply increasing publishing volume. AI can be useful for research, drafting and editing, but content should still offer original information, clear expertise and genuine value to readers.

Google has also published research into systems designed to identify networks of AI-generated spam. This provides another indication that large-scale automated content created primarily to influence search rankings is likely to remain an area of focus.

For publishers and SEO professionals, the message is relatively simple: using AI is not necessarily the problem. Using AI to produce large amounts of low-value content purely for SEO could be.
