Google is expanding its AI-powered search experience by introducing image generation within AI Overviews and launching a redesigned Google Images homepage. The new features will begin rolling out over the coming weeks.

The announcement, made by Google’s Senior Engineering Director for Search, forms part of the company’s plans to mark the 25th anniversary of Google Images while enhancing how users discover and create visual content.

AI Overviews Can Now Create Images

One of the biggest updates allows users to generate custom images directly from AI Overviews using Google’s latest Nano Banana image model.

Instead of simply displaying existing images from across the web, users will be able to enter a text prompt and receive an AI-generated image based on their request.

For example, someone searching for ideas for a nautical-themed bedroom can receive a bespoke visual alongside suggested follow-up prompts to refine the design. The feature can also create comparison images, helping users visualise different concepts side by side.

Google says image generation within AI Overviews will initially launch in English across regions where AI image creation is already supported.

Google Images Gets a New Look

Alongside AI Overviews, Google is introducing a refreshed homepage for Google Images.

The updated interface is designed to act as a personalised image gallery, displaying content from across the web that updates in real time. Signed-in users will receive recommendations based on their interests and browsing activity, with the option to organise saved images into dedicated collections.

The redesigned homepage will first be available on desktop for users in the United States using English, before any wider rollout.

Why the Update Matters

AI Overviews already answer many search queries without requiring users to click through to external websites. Adding image generation gives Google another way to provide instant visual content directly within search results.

Meanwhile, the redesigned Google Images homepage introduces a more personalised way to browse visual content, moving beyond the traditional keyword search experience.

What to Expect Next

Both features are being introduced gradually, and Google has not confirmed an exact timeline for global availability.

As Google continues to expand its AI capabilities across Search, these latest updates highlight the company’s growing focus on combining generative AI with visual search, giving users more ways to explore, create and discover content directly within Google’s ecosystem.
