Google’s John Mueller has warned businesses against relying on quick AI SEO tactics, stressing that traditional search engine optimisation practices remain essential.

During a recent interview with David Iwanow, Mueller discussed how SEO is evolving alongside AI-powered search. He explained that many of the principles behind successful traditional SEO still apply, despite changes in how people discover information online.

The Problem with Listicles

The interview covered the growing use of listicles, particularly articles featuring rankings such as the ‘top companies’ in a particular industry. Some businesses have used this type of content to influence AI chatbots and encourage them to recommend their brand as a leading option.

Although listicles can provide useful information, their growing popularity has also resulted in large amounts of low-quality content.

Mueller explained that SEO trends often follow a familiar pattern. A particular tactic becomes popular after people discover that it works, leading others to copy it, sometimes without maintaining any real quality. Eventually, search systems adapt and may begin treating the tactic as a sign of spam.

He stressed that listicles are not automatically spam, but they must offer genuine value to readers.

Mueller also warned against making an entire SEO strategy dependent on one technique. AI search systems are developing quickly, meaning tactics that work today may become ineffective in the future.

Instead, he encouraged businesses to build a reliable website with useful content and a strong foundation that search engines and AI platforms will continue to recognise as valuable.

Businesses Should Monitor Their SEO Providers

The discussion also raised concerns about SEO agencies using questionable methods to improve their clients’ visibility in AI search results.

Mueller pointed out that misleading SEO practices are nothing new. Techniques such as keyword stuffing and hiding white text against a white background were used in traditional SEO long before the rise of AI-powered search.

Although these methods may produce temporary results, they can eventually stop working.

He advised businesses to pay close attention to the work carried out by external SEO providers rather than simply accepting their claims. Companies should understand which strategies their agencies are using and question whether those methods are genuinely helping their websites.

This is particularly important when working with providers that rely on low-quality tactics rather than building sustainable search visibility.

Technical SEO Will Continue to Matter for AI Search

Mueller also addressed whether businesses need to adopt entirely new optimisation methods for AI search, including creating special Markdown pages or focusing exclusively on Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

He explained that many AI platforms still depend on information and processes associated with traditional SEO. As a result, technical SEO is expected to remain an important part of website optimisation.

Although AI systems may crawl websites differently depending on their purpose, Mueller views these changes as another aspect of technical SEO rather than a replacement for established practices.

For example, AI systems may crawl content differently depending on whether they are gathering information for training or looking for the latest available content. However, understanding how websites are accessed and processed remains part of the wider technical SEO process.

Focus on Long-Term SEO Strategies

The main message from Mueller’s comments is that businesses should avoid chasing every new AI SEO trend.

While experimenting with different approaches can be useful, relying entirely on short-term tactics could leave a website vulnerable when search systems change.

A stronger strategy involves maintaining a good user experience, publishing useful and relevant content, and building awareness among the right audiences.

These established SEO principles remain important as search technology develops. Rather than treating AI search as a completely separate discipline, businesses should continue investing in the technical foundations and content quality that make their websites useful to both people and search systems.
