Baidu has introduced a new AI Traffic Analysis section within its webmaster tools, giving website owners a way to track how their pages appear in AI-generated search results.

The feature was spotted by Chinese webmasters around 15 September, with Baidu confirming its introduction the following day. However, the reporting system is not fully operational yet. Baidu says the feature is being introduced gradually, meaning some dashboards may currently show no data.

Even without live figures, the new reporting tools provide an insight into how Baidu is approaching AI search visibility.

Four New AI Search Metrics

The upcoming report will track four main measures:

  • AI Citations: The number of times a website page is referenced in an AI-generated answer.
  • AI Impressions: The number of times users are shown a link to a cited page.
  • AI Clicks: The number of clicks received by cited pages.
  • AI CTR: The click-through rate calculated using AI clicks and AI citations.

The dashboard will also provide information on citation trends and the number of pages being cited over time.

Website owners will be able to see lists of the most frequently cited keywords and pages, with both tables ranked according to clicks and limited to the top 50,000 results.

Baidu says the information will be updated daily using data from the previous day, although there may be occasional delays.

Baidu’s CTR Calculation Is Different

One detail SEOs will need to pay attention to is how Baidu calculates its AI CTR.

Rather than dividing clicks by impressions, the platform calculates the figure by dividing AI clicks by AI citations.

This is different from the approach commonly used in traditional search reporting.

The distinction matters because a page can potentially be cited without its link being clearly visible to the user. For example, a source could appear inside a collapsed section of an AI response.

As a result, Baidu’s reported CTR may not show the performance of every visible link in the same way as a traditional impressions-based CTR.

Comparing clicks with impressions separately could therefore provide additional insight once enough data becomes available.

The Data Only Covers Baidu Search

There is also an important limitation to the new report.

Baidu says the information relates to AI answers appearing within its traditional search environment. It does not appear to cover all of Baidu’s separate AI products.

This means the data should not be treated as a complete picture of AI search activity in China.

Other major platforms, including Doubao, DeepSeek, Qwen and Kimi, operate their own AI ecosystems and do not share their performance data with Baidu.

For businesses targeting Chinese users, these services may be important sources of AI visibility depending on their industry and audience.

Keyword Data Could Be Valuable

While the headline metrics will attract attention, the keyword information could prove particularly useful for SEO teams.

The report should reveal which searches are generating AI answers that cite particular websites. This could provide new information about the types of questions driving AI-generated search results.

SEOs may be able to use these findings to identify topics where their content is already being referenced and areas where competitors are appearing instead.

However, Baidu’s data should not automatically be applied to other AI platforms.

Different AI search systems can favour different sources and websites. A keyword that produces a citation on Baidu may not generate the same result on DeepSeek, Qwen or another platform.

The data is therefore better viewed as something to investigate and test rather than a universal AI SEO formula.

A New Way to Measure AI Visibility

The launch also represents a notable change for Baidu’s webmaster platform.

The service has received relatively few major updates in recent years, while some Chinese SEO professionals have questioned how much attention the platform receives.

Adding dedicated AI citation reporting could change that by giving website owners a reason to monitor their Baidu presence more closely.

It also places Baidu among the search platforms that are beginning to separate AI visibility from traditional search performance.

For international businesses, first-party data could be particularly useful in China, where understanding visibility across multiple AI platforms can otherwise be difficult.

What Should Website Owners Do?

Website owners can prepare for the new reporting system even before the data becomes available.

Businesses targeting the Chinese market should consider verifying their websites through the Baidu Search Resource Platform if they have not already done so.

Once reporting begins, establishing an initial baseline will make it easier to track changes over time. Early figures may be more useful for monitoring growth than for comparing performance between different websites.

Website owners should also avoid assuming that AI citations will automatically improve traditional Baidu rankings. There is currently no stated evidence from Baidu that receiving an AI citation increases a site’s ranking strength.

It may also be useful to monitor server logs for crawlers operated by other Chinese AI platforms. Baidu’s new report will not provide information about activity from those separate services.

What Comes Next?

Baidu’s AI Traffic Analysis feature is still being rolled out, so its practical value will become clearer once more websites begin receiving data.

For now, the definitions behind the four metrics provide the clearest indication of how Baidu intends to measure AI visibility.

The introduction of separate citation, impression and click data also highlights an important point for SEOs. Being mentioned by an AI system, having that mention displayed to users and receiving traffic from it are three different things.

As AI search continues to develop, understanding those differences will become increasingly important for businesses trying to measure how their content is being discovered and used.
