Google Search advocate John Mueller has shared his experience testing Markdown files as a way of making website content easier for AI crawlers and large language models (LLMs) to process. The discussion began after a Reddit user asked whether website owners were seeing any benefits from providing Markdown versions of their pages to AI systems. While the idea has gained attention among SEOs and developers, Mueller’s own testing suggests that the approach may not currently provide the AI search advantage some website owners are hoping for.

Markdown is a simple format designed to make written content easy for both people and machines to read. Unlike a standard webpage, a Markdown file does not contain much of the code and functionality normally used to create an interactive website, such as JavaScript, CSS and other elements associated with the visual presentation of a page. This has led some website owners to experiment with offering Markdown versions of their content specifically for AI systems, with the expectation that simpler files could make it easier and more efficient for AI crawlers to access and understand information.

The thinking behind the approach is fairly straightforward. Instead of an AI crawler having to process a complete HTML webpage containing navigation, scripts, styling and other elements, it could receive a much smaller Markdown document containing the main content. Some SEOs have therefore suggested that providing this alternative format could potentially make websites more attractive to AI systems and perhaps increase the chances of their content being referenced in AI-generated search results.

However, Mueller’s experience appears to paint a different picture. Responding to the Reddit discussion, he explained that on his own test websites, the only crawlers claiming to accept Markdown were SEO tools. In other words, he has not seen evidence from his testing that major AI crawlers are regularly requesting Markdown versions of webpages. Mueller also pointed out a practical issue for website owners who want to investigate this themselves: many server configurations do not automatically record the HTTP Accept header, which can make it difficult to determine whether a crawler is specifically requesting a Markdown response.

His advice was therefore to monitor what is actually happening on a website before investing significant time in creating and maintaining separate Markdown versions of every page. By tracking crawler requests and checking whether AI systems are genuinely asking for Markdown content, site owners can make a more informed decision about whether the format is worth implementing.

There is also a wider question about whether AI search engines actually need websites to provide special versions of their content. Major search engines and AI companies have been crawling and processing HTML for many years, and modern AI systems are already capable of extracting useful information from standard webpages. Creating a separate version specifically for AI crawlers could therefore offer little benefit if those systems are already able to access and understand the original HTML.

This is one reason why the idea of providing specially prepared content to AI systems has been compared with older SEO techniques such as keyword meta tags. In the early days of search optimisation, website owners could provide search engines with keyword information that was not necessarily visible to users. The system was eventually abused by some site owners who filled these fields with excessive keywords, variations and terms that did not accurately represent the page. As a result, search engines moved away from relying on this type of information.

A similar concern could apply to content created specifically for AI crawlers. If website owners were able to provide one version of a page to human visitors and another version designed specifically to influence AI systems, there would be obvious questions about whether the AI-facing version accurately reflects what users see. From the perspective of an AI search engine, processing the publicly available HTML may therefore remain the more reliable option.

Cloudflare has taken a more positive view of Markdown’s potential use with AI agents. The company has introduced technology that can convert webpages from HTML into Markdown when an AI system requests the format. Its explanation is that Markdown has become increasingly useful for AI agents because its simple structure can make information easier to process while reducing the amount of data that needs to be handled. With its Markdown for Agents feature enabled, websites using Cloudflare can potentially respond to requests for text/markdown by having their HTML content converted automatically.

That does not necessarily mean that website owners should expect higher rankings or more AI citations simply because they make Markdown available. The ability to convert a webpage into Markdown is different from proving that AI search engines prefer or prioritise websites that provide Markdown files. At present, there is limited evidence that creating these files specifically for AI crawlers will directly improve visibility in AI search results.

Markdown does, however, have a well-established role in another area of AI. Rather than using it as an alternative version of public webpages, companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic use Markdown extensively for providing instructions and context to AI agents. For example, OpenAI’s Codex can use AGENTS.md files to provide additional instructions and project-specific information before carrying out tasks. In this situation, Markdown is useful because it provides a clear and structured way of communicating instructions to an AI system.

This distinction is important for website owners and SEOs. Markdown can be extremely useful when it is being used to provide structured information, instructions or context to an AI agent, but that does not automatically mean that offering Markdown versions of ordinary webpages will provide an SEO advantage. The two uses serve very different purposes.

For now, Mueller’s experience suggests that website owners should avoid assuming that Markdown files will automatically improve their performance in AI search. His test sites have not shown significant interest from major crawlers, with SEO tools appearing to be the main systems requesting Markdown. Rather than generating large numbers of alternative files without knowing whether they are being used, website owners may be better off first checking their server logs and analytics to see what AI crawlers are actually requesting.

The wider lesson is that there is currently no clear evidence that simply publishing Markdown versions of existing webpages will lead to more AI citations, better visibility or higher rankings in generative search. AI systems are already capable of crawling and processing HTML, while Markdown remains particularly valuable for communicating structured instructions and context to AI agents. As AI search continues to develop, the best approach is likely to focus on making the original website content clear, useful and accessible rather than relying on a separate format in the hope of gaining an advantage.
