Fabrice Canel, one of Microsoft’s longest-serving search executives and a familiar figure within the SEO community, has officially retired after nearly three decades with the company. His retirement marks the end of a career that played a major role in shaping Bing’s search technology and its relationship with website owners around the world.

Canel announced that he stepped down from Microsoft on 1 July, sharing the news in a farewell message to colleagues, partners and the wider webmaster community. He explained that he had chosen to retire through Microsoft’s Voluntary Retirement Programme after almost 30 years with the business.

Throughout his career, Canel became one of the most recognisable public representatives of Bing. As Principal Product Manager, he led the teams responsible for web crawling and indexing, ensuring that Bing could efficiently discover, process and rank content across the internet.

His work extended far beyond the technical side of search. Over the years, he regularly engaged with SEO professionals, publishers and developers, helping them better understand how Bing’s search engine operates and how websites could improve their visibility.

One of Canel’s most notable contributions was his leadership in developing and promoting IndexNow. Introduced in 2021 alongside Yandex, the open protocol allows website owners to instantly notify participating search engines whenever pages are added, updated or removed.

The goal of IndexNow was to make website indexing more efficient by reducing the need for search engines to repeatedly crawl unchanged pages. Since its launch, the protocol has gained support from several technology companies and content management platforms.

Canel also played an important role in the continued development of Bing Webmaster Tools. He frequently shared updates, guidance and technical advice to help website owners manage their online presence more effectively.

Even in recent months, he remained actively involved in discussions around search and artificial intelligence. He co-authored guidance explaining how duplicate content may influence visibility within AI-powered search experiences, highlighting Microsoft’s continued focus on evolving search technologies.

In his retirement announcement, Canel reflected positively on his time at Microsoft. He described his career as an opportunity to solve real-world challenges while supporting webmasters, publishers and businesses navigating an ever-changing digital landscape.

Although leadership changes naturally occur over time, Canel’s influence on Bing’s search ecosystem has been significant. His work helped strengthen communication between Microsoft and the webmaster community while supporting innovations that continue to shape modern search.
