Perplexity has officially made its Comet browser freely available worldwide, following an initial limited beta period. The browser comes with AI features built in, giving users access to an intelligent assistant directly within the browsing experience.
Key points include:
- Comet integrates an AI assistant that provides direct answers while browsing.
- The assistant can support research, online shopping, and email management within the browser itself.
- The browser is now free for all users after a closed beta launch.
With the shift from a waitlist system to open access, Comet is now available as a free desktop download across the globe. Every new tab features the AI assistant, allowing people to ask questions, generate page summaries, and move through the web without juggling endless search results or switching between multiple tools.
Comet was first unveiled in July under a limited release. Since then, Perplexity reports that “millions” signed up to the waitlist, with early testers asking between six and eighteen times more questions on their first day of use compared to standard browsing behaviour.
This development signals a challenge to conventional search engines and browsers, as Comet adopts an AI-first design for navigating the web. By placing the assistant at the core of the experience, Perplexity reduces the need for repetitive searches and the hassle of managing countless open tabs.
What Makes Comet Different
At the heart of Comet’s design is the Comet Assistant, an AI-driven tool that works alongside users to manage tasks such as online research, meeting support, coding help, and shopping activities.
The assistant is built into every new tab, making it immediately available to answer queries or carry out actions without interrupting the user’s workflow.
Unlike conventional browsers, where users often need to open search engines separately, switch between multiple tabs, or rely on additional tools, Comet delivers support directly within the browsing experience. By using natural language, users can ask questions and receive responses sourced from across the web.
Background Assistants
Perplexity has also unveiled its new Background Assistants, designed to run tasks simultaneously and independently, without needing constant user oversight.
These Background Assistants expand on the company’s growing suite of AI tools and are intended to handle work in the background while users focus on other activities.
They follow on from the recently introduced Email Assistant, which is currently exclusive to Max Subscribers. The Email Assistant can be copied into email conversations to take care of scheduling, draft responses, and manage inbox duties – all without the need to switch into a separate email application.
Mobile & Voice Coming Soon
Since its release in July, Comet has only been available on desktop, but Perplexity has now unveiled a preview of its mobile app for both iPhone and Android.
The mobile edition will feature voice technology, giving users the option to engage with Comet assistants through spoken commands instead of typing.
